Pad Construction & Dirt Work

Site grading, cut-and-fill, road building, and pad preparation for drilling and production operations across the Powder River Basin.

Overview

The Foundation of Every Well Site

Bulldozer grading a well pad site

Every drilling or production operation starts with the ground beneath it. WYO Services handles pad construction and dirt work for oil and gas operators throughout Campbell, Converse, and surrounding counties. From initial survey stakes to final compaction, our crews move dirt with the precision and urgency that field schedules demand.

We build pads that hold up under heavy rig loads, access roads that stay passable through Wyoming weather, and production sites graded for proper drainage. Our equipment fleet and experienced operators allow us to manage cut-and-fill volumes efficiently, keeping your project on schedule and within spec.

What We Do

Dirt Work Capabilities

Drill Pad Construction

Full-scale pad builds sized to operator specifications, engineered for rig weight and equipment staging. We handle cut-and-fill balancing to minimize haul distances and material costs.

Access Road Building

All-weather access roads built to handle heavy truck traffic, water haulers, and rig moves. Proper crown, drainage, and base material keep roads functional year-round.

Site Grading & Drainage

Precision grading that directs water away from wellheads, tanks, and equipment areas. Proper slope and drainage prevent erosion and protect site infrastructure.

Production Site Preparation

Tank battery pads, separator locations, and containment areas built to regulatory standards. We coordinate with operators to match site layout requirements before dirt moves.

Cut & Fill Operations

Large-volume earthmoving for terrain that does not cooperate. We balance cuts and fills to keep material on-site whenever possible, reducing trucking costs and turnaround time.

Compaction & Finish Work

Proper compaction testing and finish grading ensure pads meet load-bearing requirements. We do not cut corners on the work that determines whether your site holds up or settles out.

Our Process

How We Build Your Pad

  1. Survey & Planning

We review site plans, walk the location, and confirm grades, setbacks, and access points before equipment rolls. Understanding the terrain and operator requirements up front prevents costly rework.

  2. Site Clearing

Vegetation removal, topsoil stripping, and stockpiling. We segregate and preserve topsoil for future reclamation, meeting regulatory requirements from day one.

  3. Grading & Cut-Fill

Operators move material to achieve design grades. We balance earthwork volumes on-site where possible, building the pad to spec while minimizing off-site hauling.

  4. Drainage

Ditches, berms, and slope contouring direct stormwater away from the working surface. Proper drainage protects both the pad and surrounding land.

  5. Compaction & Finish

Final grading and compaction bring the pad to load-bearing standards. We verify density and surface quality so the site is ready for rig-up or equipment placement.

FAQ

Common Questions About Pad Construction

What is a typical well pad size?

Pad dimensions depend on the operator, rig size, and number of wells planned. Single-well pads may run 3 to 5 acres, while multi-well pads can exceed 10 acres. We build to whatever footprint your drilling plan requires.

How long does pad construction take?

Timeline depends on pad size, terrain, soil conditions, and weather. A straightforward single-well pad on relatively flat ground can be completed in a matter of days. Larger multi-well pads or sites with significant cut-and-fill may take longer. We work with your drilling schedule to hit move-in dates.

What equipment do you use?

Our fleet includes dozers, excavators, scrapers, motor graders, compactors, and water trucks. We match equipment to the job -- lighter machines for finish work, heavy iron for large-volume earthmoving.

How do you handle difficult soil conditions?

The Powder River Basin throws a range of soil types at us, from sandy loam to heavy clay and everything in between. We adjust compaction methods, moisture content, and material placement based on what the ground gives us. If subgrade conditions require stabilization, we address that before building up.
